Health systems compared

Health systems vary in their functionality and development in different countries. In this interview we are going to focus on the ex-countries of the SFRY.

If you were to compare the possibility of progress and development of these health systems, what keypoints would you point out?

I must say that Slovenia is ahead of all the other ex republics of the SFRY. The Slovenian system should be a rolemodel for all the former Republics of the common state. Despite the divided public opinion of the Slovenians, who are very critical of their health system. I would say that all health systems are still in a phase of transition: some at the beginning, some in the middle, and Slovenians somewhere in the last third.

What do you, as a manager, politician and diagnostic surgeon, think of the Slovenian healthcare system?
The situation has improved in recent years. Maybe because of the way the health system is managed. Your system has the best quality of service and level of service.

Which is the weakest system in that part of Europe?

It is certainly the health system of Macedonia, but it is slowly progressing. To a large extent due to political changes and positive trends. I say this as politically neutral: financial investments in the healthcare system have been made, much is being done to educate experts and medicine has made a lot of progress in that regard.

What can we learn from Macedonians?

They have a strong e-application for all citizens. This works on all smartphones, tablets or computers and lets the citizens apply for a doctor visit, every patient sees the waiting list and knows how long he has to wait. This part of the system is managed perfectly. Such a system is being tested now in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). I would  suggest to the new BiH government to implement the application, since the positive effect and transparency are very beneficial o the public.

Do you support the idea that the profession should be managed by a health care system, so there should be no managers?

The experts know the system best. I am committed to depoliticising the health system in BiH as well as elsewhere.
